Flooring installation that starts with a flat subfloor

Hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, laminate and tile, installed with the prep work that decides whether a floor stays quiet and tight for years.

Finished basement wet bar with wood-look porcelain tile on the bar front and back wall, a walnut bar top with LED under-lighting, white shaker cabinets, floating shelves and dark vinyl plank flooring

Most flooring problems start underneath

Squeaks, gaps, cracked tile and planks that peak at the seams usually trace back to the subfloor — a dip, a loose panel, moisture in a slab — or to skipping acclimation and expansion gaps. We check flatness and moisture first and correct them before anything goes down.

Then it is the details people notice: layout that avoids slivers at doorways, clean transitions between rooms, and baseboard and quarter-round finished tight.

Comparing flooring materials

A quick guide to how the common options behave. The right answer depends on the room, the subfloor and how you live.

Comparing flooring materials
Material Water toleranceFeel underfootBest roomsWorth knowing
Hardwood Low Warm, solid, natural Living, dining, bedrooms Can be refinished. Not for bathrooms or damp basements.
Engineered hardwood Low–moderate Like hardwood Main floors, some basements Real wood top layer on a stable core; handles seasonal change better.
Luxury vinyl plank High Softer, quieter Basements, kitchens, whole-home Water-resistant and forgiving. Quality varies a lot by product.
Laminate Moderate Firm Bedrooms, living areas Durable surface, good value. Standing water is its weak point.
Porcelain tile Very high Hard, cool unless heated Bathrooms, entries, kitchens, basements Nearly indestructible; pairs well with in-floor heat.

Before you choose

Where it goes
Below grade, in a kitchen or bathroom, or over in-floor heat — each narrows the choice.
Room-to-room flow
Running one floor through the main level makes it feel larger; transitions need planning at stairs and doorways.
Stairs
Stair treads and nosings need to match or complement the floor. Decide early.
Baseboards
Removing and reinstalling baseboard gives a cleaner finish than adding quarter-round over it.

What clients say

It was a pleasure working with Johnny! Johnny and his team did a complete renovation of my bathroom. They did a fantastic job and and I am extremely pleased with the results. Johnny is very knowledgeable and helpful when it came to explaining all of the different options available. Johnny communicated throughout the renovation. I would highly recommend Shabo Construction! I am looking forward to working with Johnny again in the future.

I had my kitchen, powder room, and upstairs bathroom done. The work is absolutely beautiful! The team communicated with me throughout the entire process and provided regular updates about everything. I had trouble picking colours that would look nice in the space, and Johnny helped me pick some that would match the style I wanted. The rooms that they worked on were in rough shape, but now look nice and modern. The entire crew was very nice to work with, and I will definitely use their services again in the future!

We had an incredible time working with Johnny. He was so responsive and communicative throughout the whole process. Absolutely the most polite, friendly accommodating guy to work with. And, his workmanship and attention to detail was top notch. Excellent work, no corners cut. My bathroom is incredible, and everything I could have hoped for. 10 out of 10, will use again!!

Yes. Removal and disposal are included when we quote it, along with the subfloor prep the new floor needs.

Do I need to buy the flooring myself?

Either works. We can supply it, or install material you have bought — we will check quantity, underlay and transitions before install day.
