New broom-finished concrete patio and walkway with saw-cut control joints running along the house, beside freshly laid sod

Concrete work

Concrete patios and walkways built on a proper base

Slabs that drain away from the house, control joints where cracks want to happen, and a clean finish edge to edge.

What makes concrete last

Concrete fails from below: a soft or poorly compacted base, water that sits against the house, or slabs with no room to move. We excavate to firm ground, compact a granular base, form with a slope away from the foundation, and saw-cut or tool control joints so any cracking happens in a straight line where you want it.

The backyard patio and walkway in our gallery were finished with a broom texture for grip and tooled edges, then new sod was laid against it.

Concrete projects

Planning a slab

Drainage
A slope away from the house and somewhere for water to go at the edges.
Thickness and reinforcement
Matched to what the slab carries — foot traffic, a hot tub or a vehicle.
Finish
Broom finish for grip outdoors; exposed aggregate and stamped finishes on request.
Timing
Concrete needs suitable temperatures to cure well, which shapes the season for outdoor work.

Questions

Concrete Work: common questions

Still have a question? Ask us directly

Will my new concrete crack?

Most concrete develops some hairline cracks as it cures and moves. Control joints are placed so those cracks follow the joints instead of wandering across the slab.

Do you do stamped concrete?

Ask us about your project — the old site mentioned stamped concrete. We will confirm what finish options are available for your job.
