Tile & waterproofing

Bathroom tile that stays flat, sealed and dry behind

Tile is the part you see. The membrane underneath is the part that protects your house. We take both seriously.

Grout is not waterproof

Tile and grout let water through over time. What stops it reaching the framing is the layer beneath: a sheet or liquid membrane that runs continuously across the floor, up the walls and into every niche and corner, with sealed seams and pipe penetrations.

Over that, we set tile on flat, plumb walls so large-format pieces sit without lips, and slope shower floors so water drains instead of pooling.

Choosing tile

Porcelain vs ceramic
Porcelain is denser and absorbs less water, which suits floors and showers. Ceramic is lighter and fine for many walls.
Large format
Big tiles mean fewer grout lines and a calmer look, but walls and floors need to be flatter, which is part of our prep.
Natural stone
Marble and other stone are beautiful but softer and need sealing. Marble-look porcelain gives the look with less upkeep.
Floor grip
Small mosaics or textured finishes on shower floors give better footing than polished tile.
Grout colour
A grout close to the tile colour hides lines; a contrasting grout makes the pattern part of the design.

Questions

Bathroom Tile & Waterproofing: common questions

Still have a question? Ask us directly

Which waterproofing system do you use?

We use manufacturer-tested membrane systems and follow their installation instructions, including how seams, corners and drains are sealed. We will tell you which product is going into your shower.

Can you tile over existing tile?

Sometimes on a dry floor or backsplash, but not in a shower. In wet areas we remove the old tile so we can see what is behind it and install a membrane.

My grout keeps cracking — why?

Usually movement: a flexing subfloor, missing movement joints, or a failing substrate. Regrouting alone rarely fixes it for long; we look at the cause first.
