Luxury vinyl plank

Luxury vinyl plank for basements, kitchens and busy homes

Water-resistant, warmer and quieter than tile, and convincing as wood — when the product is good and the subfloor is flat.

Why LVP is popular below grade

Rigid-core luxury vinyl plank tolerates the moisture and temperature swings of a basement far better than wood or laminate. It clicks together as a floating floor, so it can go over a properly prepared concrete slab with the right underlay.

It is also unforgiving of dips: any low spot telegraphs through or stresses the joints. Levelling the slab is the part of the job that makes it last.

Comparing flooring materials

A quick guide to how the common options behave. The right answer depends on the room, the subfloor and how you live.

Comparing flooring materials
Material Water toleranceFeel underfootBest roomsWorth knowing
Hardwood Low Warm, solid, natural Living, dining, bedrooms Can be refinished. Not for bathrooms or damp basements.
Engineered hardwood Low–moderate Like hardwood Main floors, some basements Real wood top layer on a stable core; handles seasonal change better.
Luxury vinyl plank High Softer, quieter Basements, kitchens, whole-home Water-resistant and forgiving. Quality varies a lot by product.
Laminate Moderate Firm Bedrooms, living areas Durable surface, good value. Standing water is its weak point.
Porcelain tile Very high Hard, cool unless heated Bathrooms, entries, kitchens, basements Nearly indestructible; pairs well with in-floor heat.

Comparing LVP products

Wear layer
Thicker wear layers resist scratches better in busy homes and rentals.
Core type
Stone-plastic (SPC) cores are rigid and stable; wood-plastic (WPC) cores feel softer.
Underlay
Some products have it attached. Basements may need a vapour barrier too — follow the manufacturer.

Questions

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP): common questions

Still have a question? Ask us directly

Is LVP waterproof?

The planks themselves handle water well, but water can still get under the floor at the edges. It is water-resistant flooring, not a fix for a wet basement.

Can LVP go over existing tile?

Sometimes, if the tile is flat and solid and the height change works at doors and stairs. We will check.
